SILVANOS looked quite different today, the dark mood of the meeting
wafting from their table like the garlicky smells from the kitchen. It was raining outside, too, and the fake Italian décor appeared even more garish in the artificial overhead lighting.
Onga had agreed to meet Shigure alone, both his men and Shigures waiting in the cars outside. The Korean underboss was wearing a bottle-green suit, of all things, but the shirt with it was in an unusually subdued shade of yellow, making him look almost decent.
“What is this about, Matsunaga-san? Are you still smarting over that sword? You know there was no other way to go about it.”
“I know. It was one of my men who started the trouble, so the sword is your due. I didnt call you here to talk about that.”
Onga sipped his coffee, waiting. They hadnt ordered any food, and Shigure was grateful for that, since he didnt have the stomach for pasta right now, not when he had to either start the war theyd been skirting or beg his enemy for help. It had to be done bluntly, without the usual tiptoeing both captains did around each other, because this time Shigure needed answers, and he would risk anything to get them.
He held Ongas eyes, ready to catch any reaction to his next words.
“Where is Kenshin-san?”
They kept silent, studying each other for a long, uncertain second. In spite of his boisterous behavior—or maybe because of it—the Korean was a good player, quite proficient at hiding his true intentions, but he was also a forthright man, and Shigure was counting on that, since not a single muscle on his face had moved at Shigures question. Finally, Onga blinked, and Shigure held his breath.
“Who?”
The bafflement in those usually crafty eyes was so comical that Shigure would have laughed if Onga hadnt just cut his chances of finding Kenshin in half. It would have been awful if the DaitM-kai were the ones keeping the American, but at least Shigure would have known what he was fighting against.
“Harrisu Ken,” he said wearily, and Ongas face reflected even more confusion at the foreign name. “The gaijin Ive been… uh… seeing.”
“Ah, that gaijin. What, youve lost him in a matsuri crowd?”
“Hes been kidnapped. And guess what they found beside his wallet.”
Ongas smirk froze. “A DaitM-kai badge.”
Shigure nodded, and the Koreans curses were so heartfelt he either had to be sincere or had to be a damn good actor.
“This is becoming a true pain in the ass. Who on earth would be stupid enough to try to play us against each other?”
“Dont know, but hes almost succeeded twice. Its only logical for him to keep raising the stakes.”
“Yeah, its logical if he wants to go honor his ancestors in person.”
“Oh, dont worry. Ill make sure he pays a visit to hell even if he hasnt any ancestor there. But I have to catch the bastard first.”
Onga nodded solemnly. “Ill keep my eyes open and let you know if I find anything.”
Shigure clenched his teeth.
